Fluted, Inverted Teardrop, Alloy Stem Avons.

 Morning all,

I have just finished two new floats.

"Inverted Teardrop, Alloy Stem Avons" Taking approximately 3 no 4s (0.6 g) for light river work.



I have made these mainly for my own interest as I have never seen this combination before and thought it may suit the way I fish when after silvers using a closed face reel in blustery conditions, hopfully, stopping/reducing the need for back shotting and enabling tighter control of the the line/float.....we shall see!!!!

Raw materials used were balsa and alloy for the stem with charcoal, white and fluorescent orange paints, finished with black whippings.

Below are a couole of comparison picture showing the size of the smaller, wire stem floats to the larger wooden stem floats.

Mini Driftbeaters....The Christening

 Morning all , The day had come to christen our new prototype Mini Driftbeaters. With Salford Pete in tow we arrived at a local venue and set up ready for a days float fishing. I marched off in front to secure our pegs while Salford Pete seemed to take an age to arrive. He was talking and walking slowly to some other bloke I did not recognise. It was only when he got closer did I recognise my old mate  "The Castertman" He popped down to see another mate of his who was also fishing. We had a chat for five minutes then Casterman skipped off stating he would be back when we had both set up and started fishing. Ten minutes later me and the oldman were ready for the all in. I was fishing off the bottom initially to see if I could catch some of the good quality silvers which were present in the lake. Lathe Made Pike Bobber - First Effort. . . .😊

This is the first float to come off my new mini lathe. Its an old style " Pike Bobber Float " for live and dead baiting. It is a steep learning curve but, at last, I feel I have something to show all of you. 😊 Cork bodied (turned by myself ) with a birch stem. Jay feather inlay with two  satelliting jungle cock feathers. Fluorescent pink paint and a brass eye. This is how it looked fresh off the lathe . . . . As I said its a steep learning curve for me: 1) Using a lathe.  2) Working with cork. Both had their challenges but a feel I have come out of the other side with a pretty good effort. With a little more practise I feel I can get this pattern looking a much better. This is how it looks now. What do you think ? 😊 Any constructive criticism is always welcome.
