MK IV Irwell Sticks

Image
Hi all, I'm still on my quest for a shallow water stick float. The float below is the 4th style I have tried. The MK IV is shorter and wider then the previous styles and takes more weight, approximately 3g ..... ish. This particular float is for smaller pieces of bread, pellet and meat but will also present maggot and caster well when bulked shotted in faster flows. I only have the one at the moment and will test as soon as possible, probable for grayling on my local river. This particular float is for smaller pieces of bread, pellet and meat but will also present maggot and caster well when rigged with bulk shot in faster flows. Next will be a larger version for bigger pieces of bread, meat and paste. PS: I manage to get out this morinng after the ladies before the footbal started,  hooked seven, lost three, caught four , all from one run on the Irwell. All the fish were caught from a two and a half foot deep run just before a five foot drop off, drip feeding maggots and liquified...

Grayling Hunt - River Irwell

Image
Hi all, Recently I made two sets of floats for Dave Riley.  Three Avons, three Barbel Sticks and a new Standard Maggot/Caster Stick  Arrangements were made for a day out trotting so we met up with for a few hours chasing Ladies on my local river. This was Daves first time targeting grayling and had never caught a one by design and never on the float. Armed with his new floats & Youngs B.J.Pin we spent a pleasent few hours in the brilliant sunshine trotting some new new sticks. Unfortunately the day started badly with me snapping six inches off my Acolyte Plus. I tightend the line to slide my float up the line and the tip parted and slid down to my float......I am very careful with all my rods so I will be contacting Drennan to see why this has happened!!!!!!! Anyway, back to fishing. It is the first time Dave and I have fished together so, after a terrible start we started to fish. The first pool was a big let down, both of us leaving biteless, the second pool just as bad!...

Stained Avons- 5AAA

Image
Hi all, I'm still on the Avons.... These are heavier versions of the first I have made.  Taking approximately 5AAA this set of five floats have been a joy to make. I really like these and have already christened the smaller model. As previously paints used were pastle yellow, white and fluorescent orange. Threads used were black and yellow. As I have said I christened the smaller version last week catching a River Irwell P.B. grayling of 1lb 1oz.....a good fish for the river present. Hopefully I will be trying these out for roach on the ribble soon.....stay tuned. P.B.River Irwell Grayling On New, Hardwood Stemmed Avons

Image
Hi All, I had a small window today to christian one of my new ....  "Hardwood Stemmed Avon Floats". Todays target fish was an Irwell Grayling, not the ghosts they once were but any winter coarse fish on the Irwell is a big ask  !!!!!!! I arrived at the river to see it high and very coloured, more so than I would have liked. Unperturbed I set up at the car and plodded off to the first run...... The first run gave up a big fat blank......not a bite..... so I wadderd off after twenty minutes to the next run. At the second run I struggled with float control as the river was really pushing through. I did have a bite and connected.....but it was off in seconds.....my spirits where starting to drop. I haven't been fishing for ages and my luck had seemed to have deserted me !!!!!! Once again I moved swims to a favoured run of mine. After ten minutes the new avon disappeared from view and I was into another fish. With the river pushing through hard the fish put up a fantastic fig...

Irwell Ladies On A New Rod & The One That Got Away

Image
I have had some issues over the last few seasons fishing small overgrown spate rivers.  The summer and autumn tree growth over head has severely hampered my fishing.  I only have fourteen foot float rods so I commissioned Andrew Boyne to create a six foot float rod for me, something a little special to ensure I could fish without being hampered by the encompassing foliage I have been patiently awaiting delivery of my new 6-foot float rod and today I finally got my hands on it. 😊😊 Both myself and Andrew arranged a social distanced fishing session to introduce him to a section of river I know reasonably well and to try out my latest acquisition, the new seven foot stream rod.  (Pictures at the end of the blog) We kept in touch by phone ensuring no contact whatsoever before the moaners start.... lol 🤣  We obviously had to fish local so I/we decided on the River Irwell. Rumours were about of grayling showing in the river which had got our juices flowing !!!! As ...
