River Wye Day 2 - 01.07.2024

Image
Morning all. Both John and I where off to a new stretch of the river today. Our chosen destination was the Wye Lee stretch of the River Wye near the bridge pillers. We arrived to find ourselves the first people there so had the pick of the pegs. John already new where he was gonna fish as did I due to short recce the night before. John was in the the first peg next to the pillers. A bit of a boilly, washing machine peg due to all the sub-surface obstructions. It looked very "Barbely" but he may well loose some end tackle. A bonus John had was we had witnessed a barbel capture from there the night previous so at least we new the were in the vacinity. It had been very warm the past week. I had my suspicions the barbel may still be spawning, or at least cleaning off in the fast water. My choice of run was a double croy. A croy is something like a jetty of rocks, man made, in this case, heading out into the river to about 40 feet. A double croy has the same jetty of rocks mirrore...

New 11g Barbel Stick

Image
Hi all, As I have got older in years I am not much of a summer angler prefering the autum and winter months. Below is the largest stick I have made to date. The smaller float is a MKIV Irewll Stick for comparison. The "Heavy Barbel Stick" above comes in at 11 plus grammes (7 swan old money) and will be used for chub and barbel in the coming colder months. I will use this when fishing specific runs on the Irwell where it is just too deep for the Irwell Sticks. TTFN      Peanut. New Barbel Sticks For a Trip Down Memory Lane

Image
I used to love float fishing on the River Severn in Bridgenorth for barbel with my dad in the early 1980's and was lucky enough to be the first name on our school match trophy all those years ago. This year we and a few friends are planning a trip down memory lane revisiting the stretches of the mighty River Severn where I learnt to fish a float on a river over 30 years ago. 😲😲😲😲😲  To commemorate the trip I am making a few new stick floats, hopefully, to catch a few barbel, amongst other species and get some nice pictures for the blog (Not to mention a bit of banta and a few pints ) 😉 This is the first one. A barbel stick Taking approximately 4AAA ( Hopefully a little more ) Constructed in balsa and aluminium the body was turned from a single piece to increase strength for the rigours of heavy barbel fishing. A fluorescent orange tip, red pearlescent body, Plus a feather inlay & Black gold, violet and scarlet silks completed the build. I ...
