Retro Procupine Quills For Summer Tenching

Image
I have been meaning to make some of these floats for a VERY long time. The Porcupine Quill is another pattern that reminds me very much of those long summer days spent a the local lodge with your mates bread fishing for tench and Crucian Carp. I used to use them on the ICI pond to catch tench to 3 lb and Crucian Carp to 1.5 lb on Carvansons lodge in the early 1980's both of which are still on the Unsworth Anglers card. The pair below are replicas of floats passed down to me from my dad who had them handed down to him from my grandad. I believe my grandad may have made them himself, or, had them made for him as I have never seen their like before or since. I remember " Borrowing " 😉 these from my dads float wallet many times  although he did not know it at the time...... Lol I was not allowed to use them in my youth and quite rightly so incase I lost one. To use them I had to sneak them into my wicker basket the night before I went fishing. ...

The Sneeky Lifter - The Christaning .......

Image
I have been waiting for this day for a couple of weeks now. It was time to test out my new float. I have christend it........... " The Sneeky Lifter "   Why..... you will find out as you read......  As I was shotting up I put two BB on to lock the float then a no'1, a no'6,  and  no'8 was then added dropper shot. I have started to get to grips with my old local lake and started getting into my feeding routeen. The fish always  come on the drop at first. rudd, and roach mainly. Good flbusy fishing if thats your thing. I put just one no'8 3/4 of the way down the line. It was fast and furious from the off . I didn't get a chance to test the float properly as it just kept flying under. Lots of small rudd and roach obliged. The float was  VERY SENSITIVE............ Somewhere between a Canal Grey & a Stillwater Blue. After an hour the smaller fish start to get pushed out and the larger fish usually move in, genera...

Tinca Stick MKII Test & The Maiden Voyage of A Merlin Mordex Centerpin.

Image
Got a pass for Sunday so, a quick word with my old man and we settled for fishing " The Cut " which is an Unsworth Anglers club water - He was following me up later as he had a few to many pints of Joseph Holts mild the previous night and felt a bit rough......the poor lamb.....LOL. I reached my  peg in good time and luckily for me the rain gods kept their distance. I set up my Conni X and fited my "Merlin Mordex Centerpin real ".This was its maiden voyage as well and I was looking forward  to having a play with it as well as assessing the new " Tinca Stick " Now, bait for the session was 6mm pellets -  de-frosted - and chopped meat & a little hemp to hold the fish in the swim......I also had some skanky maggots that had been in the fridge for about two weeks and most of them were casters but Salford Pete was on a maggot run and would be here shortly with fresh bait. The MK II Tinca Stick took 4BB plus to cock it, which is ...

2015 Rod Race - Tench and Crucian Points.

Hi all, First of all let me apologise for the lack of posts. I have been extremely busy with work and family life so fishing and the blog have taken a step backwards....unfortunately. I currently have a bee in my bonette regarding a small mill pond run by my local club. I grew up fishing here and even though a 16 meter pole will no doubt reach the other side I still love the place.  Below is the little track leading to the lodge. This is the little gem I like to play in. My Okuma centerpin and my new Tinca Stick floats where my chosen weapons of the day and I was hoping to catch a tench or , if very lucky,  a Crucian Carp. Crucians are becoming quite rare due to hybridisation with Brown Gold Fish and other ornimentals so to have crucians on my door step is a real bonous. My Tinca Sticks My session went off without a hitch fishing the pin 2 rodlenths out. I was fishing maggot out straight infront of me and corn down the side near the li...
