Inverted, Segmented, Porcupine Quills

Image
Hi all, Another float I have not made for quite a while is the  " Inverted, Segmented, Porcupine Quill" The pair below are eight inches in length which are, I would say, medium in size. The larger 12" quills are becoming quite difficult to to source.  Paints are Fluorescent Orange & White. Threads used are black and pale blue. The quills are finished off, as usual with a hand turned brass eye. These floats are a relatively simple floats to make compared to most other patterns as nature has pepared the body for you. All that is needed is a litttle sanding, however, the segmented sections do take more time to paint and whip. A very versitle float which an be used as a sensitive standard or count down waggler on still or running water. . . . . . . . . . . .  Here are a few older float pics. and fish captures on the Inverted Quills. New Porcupine Quills

Image
Hi all. I have tried a more conventional style of  Porcupine Quill. (approximately 20 cms long) The first is a standard day glow orange. Threads used are, black burgundy, dark, red and deep wine. The second quill is in .... "Glow In The Dark Yellow". Threads used are......back, turquoise and green. I am again struggling to get out and fish.  All arranged trips have fell through. ( Mainly due to me) It is looking like I will miss the early season tench sport. 😞 Now I am concentrating on the opening river season and my East Yorkshire river quest. No real targets, just looking forward to fishing new rivers and learning from the experience. These floats were originally made for tench fishing but I will be using them, hopefully, as wagglers for roach fishing on the river Derwent come the new season. I will let you know how they perform, hopefully with a bag of roach in shot. 😉 Got some more Quills on order. When they arrive I will endeavour to make some differnet styles for you ...

New Glow In The Dark & Fluorescent Porcupine Quills

Image
After my first attempt at antique looking porcupine quills  . . . . . http://purplepeanut007.blogspot.com/2018/01/retro-quills-for-summer-tenching.html?m=1 I quite fancied making  some more but with a more modern look. I decided to make just two floats to begin with. One float in  " Glow In The Dark Yellow " and the second in  " Day Glow Red / Pink ". Taking approximately 3BB the glow in the dark quill has multiple white and yellow segments near the tip of the float to aid in bite detection, metallic gold whippings, a violet band in the centre and black tippets on both ends. The painted section is a favourite colour of mine !!!! Metallic Pearlescent Blue. Looks great when the suns rays hit it. 😁 The red / pink tipped quill is made in a similar style but I have emitted the gold whippings and used a rich, vibrant red in its place. The central violet band is also absent on this float as I decided to leave it bare to show of t...

Quills, Sneaky Lifters and a G.I.T.D. Carp Stalker

Image
Below are a set of three " Retro Porcupine Quills " Black being a new addition. The other two are in the same colours as my original set. They are a slightly larger float and take a little more weight to cock ( 4BB ) compared to the originals I made for " Salford Pete " The next set completed are a prial of " Sneaky Lifters " Sporting yellow tips, pink indicating bands and finished of in original " Carp Stalker " thread colours. http://purplepeanut007.blogspot.com/2018/05/glow-in-datk-yellow-carp-stalker.html?m=1 Finally we have have a " Glow In The Dark Carp Stalker " Here is a group shot of all seven floats I am going to have a play with the porcupine quills when I get a spare five minutes..... LOL. I have a few ideas to bring them up to date. Retro floats are lovely but I always like to try and create something a little different for the eye by putting my own twist on things wherever possible ...
