Irwell Stick - Chub On The Yarrow

Image
Hi all, I got out last week will an old fishing mate John Derbyshire. We havent been out together for ages due to covid and family commitments but managed a few, cold hours on the low and clear River Yarrow last week. John kindly offered to take me to a new stretch of the Yarrow. I always like trying out new places, especially small rivers.  As soon as I looked at the the river I new we were in for a tough session. As I said it was very low and very clear but John assured me we would do well as we tackled up at the car......thats when the banter began in ernest....there is never a dull moment fishing with john....if there is a short silence between us it will soon be followed by a verbal deconstuction of my set up and my gear..........even my cloths !!!!!! lmao 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 We were both using  "Irwell Sticks" John was using the older more visable version and I was using the newer, stepped version both taking around  8 No 4s. We both started on the double peg which John s

Hi all, These are the last of the 2021 floats to be finished. 4 AAA avons this time in classic..... " Hunter Green"  😊 I have made these for Salford Pete and myself. I'm trying to get the old man to do a little trotting again. 😉 I'm going to take him and my son in law Craig on a little trip, for Craig it will be the first time fishing so hopefully I will be able to get a few fish on the bank for them. I may do a little rod race for just the three of us to spice it up a little, it will hopefully get us all bankside together more often as well. Stained Avons- 5AAA

Image
Hi all, I'm still on the Avons.... These are heavier versions of the first I have made.  Taking approximately 5AAA this set of five floats have been a joy to make. I really like these and have already christened the smaller model. As previously paints used were pastle yellow, white and fluorescent orange. Threads used were black and yellow. As I have said I christened the smaller version last week catching a River Irwell P.B. grayling of 1lb 1oz.....a good fish for the river present. Hopefully I will be trying these out for roach on the ribble soon.....stay tuned. P.B.River Irwell Grayling On New, Hardwood Stemmed Avons

Image
Hi All, I had a small window today to christian one of my new ....  "Hardwood Stemmed Avon Floats". Todays target fish was an Irwell Grayling, not the ghosts they once were but any winter coarse fish on the Irwell is a big ask  !!!!!!! I arrived at the river to see it high and very coloured, more so than I would have liked. Unperturbed I set up at the car and plodded off to the first run...... The first run gave up a big fat blank......not a bite..... so I wadderd off after twenty minutes to the next run. At the second run I struggled with float control as the river was really pushing through. I did have a bite and connected.....but it was off in seconds.....my spirits where starting to drop. I haven't been fishing for ages and my luck had seemed to have deserted me !!!!!! Once again I moved swims to a favoured run of mine. After ten minutes the new avon disappeared from view and I was into another fish. With the river pushing through hard the fish put up a fantastic fig
