River Irk Rainbows.

Image
As we set off to out on our grayling hunt Adam said . . . .  quite matter of fact. . . . .  " Do you fancy grabbing your rainbow trout and River Irk pb in one hit before we go searching for the ladies ? I can guarantee you a two pounder at the very least. !!!!!!!!! " Lets do it " I said.  " Its took us long enough to get a fishing session together " Lol. Ten minutes later we were stealthily, crawling though the undergrowth looking for some local trout action. As Adam had declared it did not take long. He spotted a good fish straight away and with a couple of well aimed casts put the bunch of maggots right past its nose . . . . . .  and the bait was readily ignored on every occasion  !!!!!!!! " Cootesie, pass us a worm mate " came a whisper deep inside the undergrowth " I quickly did his bidding and after few more trots down and we were still without a bite. On the last couple of  casts I noticed Adam jig the worm o

Irwell Sticks For The Rivers Don & Douglas.

Image
Busy with these at the moment . . . . but I love making them. My favourite float . . .  " The Irwell.Stick " The  " Irwell Stick "  was designed for fishing shallow river runs but is also been used as a general float for most species. John Derbyshire even uses them on the pole for margin fishing. They are at their best fishing 2 - 4 feet deep through slightly pacey run on a river or some where a standard sized alloy stick would struggle due to the extra pace and shallower water. I personally performed quite well using these last summer. 😉 The above caught on halibut pellet using  heavy Irwell stick  ( 4BB approximately) Below my first grayling from the Don on the same float. 😁  Until the next time. . . . . A New Balsa Stick Float

Image
I have just completed a new  " Balsa, Domed Stick Float With An Alloy Stem " I have given this particular float a day glow red/ pink tip and a white contrast band plus black, scarlet and violet whippings. The dome is twice the width of a standard  " Retro Stick Float "  to enable use with bigger baits or for trotting at distance. Great if your eyes are not the best . . . . . . . .   like mine !!!!!!! This is a prototype and takes 7 no 4s to cock it. I am very happy with the way it looks so I have left the float featherless for a change as I feel it would detract, not enhance the floats appeal. I am sure Andrew will let me know how it performs. In the meantime I think I will make a few more of these for when we hit the  River Ribble  on opening day of the season if all goes to plan. . . . . Lol I have also personalised the float with the nick name of his new born daughter. Until the next time. . . . . TTFN Peanu

Stick Float Roaching On The The River Ribble

Image
A long awaited session on the River Ribble finally came off this week. I had arrange to meet Pete Bell A.K.A  " Ribble Pete " A great float angler who knows the lower river like the back of his hand. I arrived at the river at 07.30 . . . . around an hour after sun up. " Ribble Pete "  was there since 06.00 with his usual set up. . .  Tip rod upstream and his stick rod in front. As I arrived Pete was netting a lovely roach of around 10 ounces. " Arite Miiiiike. Long time no see " Came the friendly reply in a broad Bolton accent from beneath the olive green umbrella. " Glad you made it Mike......they are really having it this morning surprising really as the river is well up but if it rise more than another six inches on top of what it is now it will kill the fishing so don't mess about and get fishing next to me. Having received my instructions from the  Ribble float master . . . . . . .  I jumped on the peg upstr

River Yarrow Part 2 - Silver City. Roving With The Ginger Assasin.

Image
Both myself and the Ginger One have been longing to go back to the . . . . . . Little River Yarrow in Bolton to continue our  . . . " Search For Silvers ". The last time we fished it we hammered the trout but only caught one silver between us which was a little disappointing.  We were a little low on bait so we called into "Adlington Angling Centre "  to stock up on some bits. John is a regular at the shop and introduced me to the owner, Andrew Gibbs. A nice guy with a top shop. Andrew sorted us out with our bits and bait. We had a chat about the days horse racing then we hit the road.  John has located a nice stretch of the River Yarrow to fish as the river is in his back yard and directed me to a stretch where he had walked but never fished. We tackle up, while chatting, donned our waders and clumped up the path to the first of Johns secret sections . . . . . . “ I’ve seen chub here Peanut . . . . . . loads of them “  said the Assas
