Day 3 River Wye - Johns Turn

Image
Morning all. Waking up this morning feeling every bone in my body aching form the last couple of days I decided not to fish but to help John get a barbel on the float. It had proved more difficult than we both anticipated but having some success the day before we were feeling quietly confident of a hook up. For this session we were back to the Wye Lea stretch, fishing from a croy as I did the previous day. The chosen run was further down stream with a lttle more even flow, much easier to run a float through that the previous one the day before. I borrowed John my set up and he was fishing withing 10 minutes. John balled in some ground bait and steadily feed pellt with meat on a size 6 hook as bait. After another 10 minutes Johns float thumped under at the end of the trot. The Harrison SU doubled over in protest. I thought we had cracked it straight way. After a few more minutes John shook his head and said " Nar. it's a chub mike, a good one, but a chub. I did the honours and ...

Inserted 50:50 Camo Green Wagglers + Heavy Hardwood Stem Irwell Sticks

Image
Happy New Year All. This quartet are my last floats of 2023. Inserted 50:50 Small Camo Green Wagglers + Heavy Hardwood Stem Irwell Sticks. The wagglers will mainly be used for tench at close quarters, the sticks for bigger baits on faster, shallow river stretches. Wagglers are Sarkanda and the sticks are balsa, all with hardwood stems. I have looked at the river many times overr the  Christmas period without finding a decent period to fish. Lets hope the new year is a little more clement. Tight lines and Happy New Year. Image
Hi all, Here are some additions for my trip to the Wye next summer. The floats below are  "5AAA Hardwood Stem Irwell Sicks" Finished in balsa with a harwood stem, black / gold threads with charcoal, white paints plus fluorescent orange tips. I have made the above for swims with a more powerful flow than normal and are capable of suspending big pieces of bread meat and paste and will be a welcome addition to mine and Johns float box. My 1st Fluted Float - 7AAA Oval Flutted Avon

Image
Hi all, Out of all the fishing floats I have seen the fluted floats, to me, can be the most decorative and I have waited a long time to attempt this pattern so I can, hopefully do it justice. I have never made a fluted float before so, please, be gentle with me....lol...😆 I have kept the first design simple and will proceed to try and master the bastics before I try anything fancy. So, below, is a 7AAA Oval Fluted Avon for barbel and chub fishing made with a balsa body and a hardwood stem, fnished with white, fluorescent orange and olive green paints. Threads used where black and gold.  Its a bit rough and ready for my taste but thought I would share and take you on my flutted float making journey as we are not born experts !!!!! I am reasonably happy with this for a first effort but will be looking to improve on this float considerably in the next coming months I have a barbel and chub fishing trip coming up next year so want to perfect this pattern ready for the long await...
