Olive Green, 10g Avons With Alloy Stems + Heavy Irwell Sticks With Hardwood Stems

Image
Morning everyone, I am back making some heavy river floats. The Olive Green, 10g Avons With Alloy Stems + Heavy Irwell Sticks With Hardwood Stems pictured below are made from Balsa with alloy and hardwood stems. When I use these avons it will be on the deeper runs with heavier baits on this river and are 19.5 cms in length.   The Heavy Irwell Sticks are for shallow, pacey runs, up to about four feet deep, also for use with all baits on the trent and are 13.5 cms in length. Finished with White, Olive Green, Flourescent orange and red/pink paints. Threads used are black and gold. I used mine this season in conjuction with these olivettes which have been quite useful saving me a few quid on conventional shot when fishing bulk down the line. Until the next time………. TTFN Peanut. River Wye Day one 30.06.24

Image
Morning all, I have not been up to much this last month due to illness but thankfully I was ok to travel when it came to a River Wye trip organised at the begining of the year.  Ross-On-Wye in Herefordshire was our destination for three nights, fishing stick & pin for chub and barbel with a pal of mine John Derbyshire. DAY 1. Travelling in Johns van the trip down to Herefordshire was smooth & went by the numbers. We arived around 11.30, checked in our digs, gabbed a bacon butty and went to reccy the nearest stretch of river. The river was spot on carrying a little colour, with a lovely large gravel bed, perfect for trotting. Tackle wise I opted for a 14ft Harrison SU. a Bob James pin & 6lb line. Bait wise we feed pellet, meat and fished meat on a size 6 hook. Float wise I chose a Heavy Wooden Stem Irwell Stick due to the fact that the river is shallow, approximatly 3ft and pushing through a bit. The large dome on the float also gives you flexibility of bait size when us...

Large Harwood Stem Irwell Sicks

Image
Hi all, Here are some additions for my trip to the Wye next summer. The floats below are  "5AAA Hardwood Stem Irwell Sicks" Finished in balsa with a harwood stem, black / gold threads with charcoal, white paints plus fluorescent orange tips. I have made the above for swims with a more powerful flow than normal and are capable of suspending big pieces of bread meat and paste and will be a welcome addition to mine and Johns float box. MK IV Irwell Sticks

Image
Hi all, I'm still on my quest for a shallow water stick float. The float below is the 4th style I have tried. The MK IV is shorter and wider then the previous styles and takes more weight, approximately 3g ..... ish. This particular float is for smaller pieces of bread, pellet and meat but will also present maggot and caster well when bulked shotted in faster flows. I only have the one at the moment and will test as soon as possible, probable for grayling on my local river. This particular float is for smaller pieces of bread, pellet and meat but will also present maggot and caster well when rigged with bulk shot in faster flows. Next will be a larger version for bigger pieces of bread, meat and paste. PS: I manage to get out this morinng after the ladies before the footbal started,  hooked seven, lost three, caught four , all from one run on the Irwell. All the fish were caught from a two and a half foot deep run just before a five foot drop off, drip feeding maggots and liquified...

Loaded Shallow Water Stick Floats - With Craig Lutener

Image
The floats below are for Craig Lutener, a mate of mine from Elton Tackle In Radcliffe. Two for him, three for me. He has asked me to make some Almost, Fully Loaded Shallow Water Stick Floats for fishing with partical baits/maggots, and casters. Not identical but slightly different in sizes and weights. We will be after two species with these floats, grayling and barbel. First will be grayling I think.....it will all depend on river levels and clarity but should happen in the next couple of weeks.
