Olive Green, 10g Avons With Alloy Stems + Heavy Irwell Sticks With Hardwood Stems

 Morning everyone,

I am back making some heavy river floats.

The Olive Green, 10g Avons With Alloy Stems + Heavy Irwell Sticks With Hardwood Stems pictured below are made from Balsa with alloy and hardwood stems.

When I use these avons it will be on the deeper runs with heavier baits on this river and are 19.5 cms in length.

 

The Heavy Irwell Sticks are for shallow, pacey runs, up to about four feet deep, also for use with all baits on the trent and are 13.5 cms in length.



Finished with White, Olive Green, Flourescent orange and red/pink paints. Threads used are black and gold.

I used mine this season in conjuction with these olivettes which have been quite useful saving me a few quid on conventional shot when fishing bulk down the line.

Lathe Made Pike Bobber - First Effort. . . .😊

This is the first float to come off my new mini lathe. Its an old style " Pike Bobber Float " for live and dead baiting. It is a steep learning curve but, at last, I feel I have something to show all of you. 😊 Cork bodied (turned by myself ) with a birch stem. Jay feather inlay with two  satelliting jungle cock feathers. Fluorescent pink paint and a brass eye. This is how it looked fresh off the lathe . . . . As I said its a steep learning curve for me: 1) Using a lathe.  2) Working with cork. Both had their challenges but a feel I have come out of the other side with a pretty good effort. With a little more practise I feel I can get this pattern looking a much better. This is how it looks now. What do you think ? 😊 Any constructive criticism is always welcome. River Wye Day 2 - 01.07.2024

Morning all. Both John and I where off to a new stretch of the river today. Our chosen destination was the Wye Lee stretch of the River Wye near the bridge pillers. We arrived to find ourselves the first people there so had the pick of the pegs. John already new where he was gonna fish as did I due to short recce the night before. John was in the the first peg next to the pillers. A bit of a boilly, washing machine peg due to all the sub-surface obstructions. It looked very "Barbely" but he may well loose some end tackle. A bonus John had was we had witnessed a barbel capture from there the night previous so at least we new the were in the vacinity. It had been very warm the past week. I had my suspicions the barbel may still be spawning, or at least cleaning off in the fast water. My choice of run was a double croy. A croy is something like a jetty of rocks, man made, in this case, heading out into the river to about 40 feet. A double croy has the same jetty of rocks mirrore...
