Heavy Wire Stemed Orange Avon - Out For Testing.

Image
I have been asked to make a. . . . " Medium To Heavy Wire Stemed Avon " for winter maggot & caster fishing , mainly for the the River Ribble &  River Dove. I have tried to cover all bases with this float and make it a multi-tasker. Requirements were 3 -4g (4 - 5 AAA ish ) with an alloy stem. I have made it in fluorescent orange in a similar style to my bobbers giving it a very large fluorescent dome.  I chose to cover a third of the floats body in fluorescent orange to enable the float to be used for heaver baits when slightly under shot. Bread, meat, pellet, paste etc. It will never replace a true loafer but will enable the user to switch between bàits at a pinch. Another is underway in sexy pink Pete 😚😚😚😚😚 😆 Testing will commence in the next few weeks. We shall see !!!!!!! Until the next time.......... TTFN Peanut. Look What The Local Wood Elf Dropped Off For Me 😊😊😊

Image
After posting some pictures of my hand turned greenhart stems a very kind soul offered to send me some. . .  "Ekki " wood.  I must admit I have never heard of Ekki. I did a little research and it sounds just the job for some nice pacemaker stems Here is a link describing Ekki . . .  😊 http://www.wood-database.com/ekki/ It has a specific gravity of 1.06 which is very similar to greenhart and slightly lighter than lignum. Greenhart. http://www.wood-database.com/greenheart/ Lignum. http://www.wood-database.com/lignum-vitae/ I will be segmenting the block in the next few days into manageable, turnable pieces. I will post the finished stems when complete. Lets hope its as good as greenhart 😊 Until the next time . . .  TTFN . . . . http://purplepeanut007.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/hand-crafted-floats-float-making-by.html?m=1 salfordfriendlyanglers.co.uk/join/

Hand Turned Greenhart Stem - Part Two

Image
After turning my first greenheart stem I decided its length and shape best suited an avon style float. After a little thought as to were I would fish with it I added birch tip and a balsa body was shaped.  All three sections were then glued together forming the basic shape you see below. I have still not decided on any colours yet. . . . Lol Traditional. Modern. Or a blend of the two.. We shall see !!!!!!!!  😉 Part One. http://purplepeanut007.blogspot.co.uk/2017/01/first-hard-wood-stem-to-come-off-lathe.html?m=1 Until the next time.......... TTFN Peanut. First Hard Wood Stem To Come Off The Lathe. 😊

Image
It doesn't look much but this is something I have wanted to do since I was a child. It took me over 30 mins to turn it. I must get some proper kit.......lol Its a hardwood stem for a stick , avon or bobber float. Not sure what I am gonna make yet. Its not Lignum . . . . . . .  (I do have one piece to play with when I feel proficient enough to attempt it) Its Green Hart.  Specific Gravity approximately 1.01 Not as dense as lignum but great to start on. The tapper at the top needs deepening and i will complete it tomorrow otherwise I am happy with my first attempt. Has anyone else made hardwood stems before ? What do you all think ? 😊 Until the next time.......... TTFN Peanut. "Shouldered Pacemaker " A Present For Reel Specialist. 😊

Image
Victor Homewood, the kind chap who transformed my two fishing reels asked me to make him an over sized . . .   " Shouldered Pacemaker Float " These floats are designed to be fished where the water is too turbulent for the hardiest of stick floats but are more sensitive than balsas or loafers. Generally they are used for smaller baits, maggots and casters etc. Victor requested it to be over sized because he also wanted to use it for stret pegging. ( Another dying art I will write a full blog about in due course ) This particular float is made from balsa and has a birch tip and stem. The body paint is metallic blue pearl paired with a double feather inlay of Jay feathers. Again , apologies. My photographic skills do not do the float justice. . . . . Whipping are metallic gold, black and a small purple tag at the base. To finished we opted for a fluorescent orange tip. Many opinions vary regarding the stem on pacemakers & stick ...
