Grayling Fishing On Shallow Water Stick Floats

Image
Trying out my new Shallow Water Stick Floats has been over due. I fancied catching a few grayling so sorted out a few shallow rigs, got my maggots and bread prepared, loaded up the car and hit the road. Now.......I have not had much luck wader wise on this river...... The first time I fell in head first, tripping over an un-seen submerged boulder !!! The second time I discovered I had a hole in my waders and one leg was soaked all day long. This time I had new waders on but it didn't stop me getting a freezing cold wet leg in the first five minutes !!!!!! Note to self...... DON'T BUY CHEAP WADERS !!!!!  As I stood mid river I should see the tell tale ripples and bubbles of trout and grayling taking flies from the surface, so, plenty of fish in the swim I thought. I was fishing with an 8 no 4s shallow water stick float with a fluorescent red tip, easily visible under the overhanging sycamore trees. It took around fifteen minutes for my first fish, a l

New Shallow Water Stick Float

I decided to go back to basics with this stick. This float has a white and red tip, a plain body with black and grey whippings. After all the fancy painted ones I quite enjoy looking at the simplicity of this design. This one is in my roving bag ready for the next Irwell session......... When the rain eventually stops here in Manchester !!!!!!! Lower Irwell Silvers & A Lump !!!! Stick Float Fishing

Image
A long over due trip on the  Lower River Irwell  to test out my new stepped stick floats was tonight's mission. Many in our club would like to know where all the silvers and small barbel have gone ? So tonight was a scouting session to try and find them !!!!!!!!!! I opted for my Abu 704 closed faced reel tonight as the wind was a little gusty coupled with my 14 foot Acolyte Plus. Bait was two pints of white maggots, a pint of hemp. Two stepped stick float rigs were knocked up at home and stored on line winders. All was ready for my little experimental session. 😁 It took around 30 minutes or my first bite and fish, a lovely chunky dace of around 5 ounces.  I shallowed my rig a little and placed a No 4s back shot on about 15 centimetres from the float to aid my presentation and got and instant response, small but very welcome. 😁 Felling a little more confident I steadily upped my feed of hemp and maggots hoping to attracted the larger fish.  Incr

Stepped Stick Floats For Maggot & Caster Fishing

As you all know  I LOVE  ❤ my stick float fishing, especially on the pin so I have made a few more for silver fishing up to approximately seven foot deep. One in metallic , pearlescent blue &  one in metallic green. Both of these have jay feather inlays plus black, gold and scarlet whippings. I have not used these to yet but have caught a few nice chub on the prototype last month. 😉 The chub where caught on the  River Severn,  Hampton Loade. Stick and pin. I have a river in mined where I want to try these out, those in the inner circle will know exactly where I will be roach fishing with these beauties...lol. Shouldered Irwell Sticks.

Image
Another upgrade to my shallow fast water trotters. The Shouldered Irwell Sticks are wider for more turbulent water than the MKIIs, have a bigger body and have a large step in them to stop any movement of the rubbers. This pair have been finished in a favourite metallic blue paint that I like with a feather plus red, gold, blue and black threads. This float really is my cup if tea and I am gagging to use a few !!!!!! Just have to wait until the 16th..... DAM IT !!!!! LOL.. 🤣 I can see me making a few of these for the coming season not to mention the Bridgenorth trip with my dad. 😁 TTFN         Peanut.      If you would like to look at my handcrafted  click on the link below.      https://purplepeanut007.blogspot.com/2017/01/handcrafted-floats-and-fishing.html?m=1        Join our club......Its FREE  !!!!!!!     http://salfordfriendlyanglers.co.uk/join/
