Large Harwood Stem Irwell Sicks

Image
Hi all, Here are some additions for my trip to the Wye next summer. The floats below are  "5AAA Hardwood Stem Irwell Sicks" Finished in balsa with a harwood stem, black / gold threads with charcoal, white paints plus fluorescent orange tips. I have made the above for swims with a more powerful flow than normal and are capable of suspending big pieces of bread meat and paste and will be a welcome addition to mine and Johns float box. Oval & Inveted Tear Drop Fluted Avons.

Image
Hi all, This is my second attempt at a fluted float. This is a large float, simple in decor, built for certain sections of the River Wye, which I have yet to have the pleasure of fishing but if its anything like the Severn it should serve well for fishing with larger, heavier baits like meat, large pellet & paste. I have added an aluminium stem to the larger float pattern for stability as it will be used in the faster stretches of the river targeting barbel and chub. The floats weight capacity is approximately 8g or 5 swan in old money. All the raw materials are from my standard floatmaking stock it is the flutting that make these floats different. The smaller oval avons are much lighter taking 3-4g and made for my roach and chub fishing. All have alloy stems for better stability. Two are for larger bait and have a wide diameter red/pink tip. The other float has a finer tip for maggot and caster fishing. I will, hopefully, test these by the end of the month on the River Ribble...

Turing A Table Leg For "The Casterman"

Image
Something a little different today. A good friend of mine Derek Kenyon AKA  "The Casterman"  asked me to copy a leg for a chair that had been through the wars and had lots of sentimental value for Derek. He has also been getting a bit of grief off his mrs as I have had the piece for months so I needed to get it done asap. I have never turnd a table leg before so this was a sharp learning curve for me. (A good job Salford Pete was on hand to help and advise) 😁😁😁😁😁 I only had dried one piece of square dried pine to use and I turned it to round previously. After marking all the high and low points on the leg I started turning the pine into the shape I wanted. I wont go into to detail but after a few hours me and the old man had finished. After completion a few pictures were taken and sent to Derek for approval. I got the approval from Derek and fished off. After finishing the peice I had a thought........ " I wonder if I could make some trout and grayling net handles ...

My 1st Fluted Float - 7AAA Oval Flutted Avon

Image
Hi all, Out of all the fishing floats I have seen the fluted floats, to me, can be the most decorative and I have waited a long time to attempt this pattern so I can, hopefully do it justice. I have never made a fluted float before so, please, be gentle with me....lol...😆 I have kept the first design simple and will proceed to try and master the bastics before I try anything fancy. So, below, is a 7AAA Oval Fluted Avon for barbel and chub fishing made with a balsa body and a hardwood stem, fnished with white, fluorescent orange and olive green paints. Threads used where black and gold.  Its a bit rough and ready for my taste but thought I would share and take you on my flutted float making journey as we are not born experts !!!!! I am reasonably happy with this for a first effort but will be looking to improve on this float considerably in the next coming months I have a barbel and chub fishing trip coming up next year so want to perfect this pattern ready for the long await...

Shouldered & Flared 4g Sticks For Long Trotting

Image
Hi all, I was recently asked to make a set of 20 no 4 (4g) Shouldered Alloy Stick Floats for a trip on the River Itchen in the coming weeks. The floats are to be used for long trotting fishing six feet plus on some runs. Because of the distance these floats will be fished at I have kept the tips as wide as I possible could, flaring the taper out just before the shoulder, initially giving a wider tip before turning the shoulder/tip. As requested the floats were stained to a dark oak finish with fluorescent orange tips plus a white collar. Black, crimson and rose gold were the threads colours used for this build. Hopefully I will soon see a plump agrayling next to one of these floats which reminds me, I must blow the cobwebs of my river gear and go fishing as I have not graced a river bank yet this season 😲😲😲😲 !!!!!
